MERS:Middle East Respiratory Syndrome is a New Respiratory Virus related to SARS spread in Saudi Arabia

A new respiratory virus related to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has killed 39 people in Saudi Arabia. Scientists have named this respiratory virus as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The new virus is related to the respiratory virus SARS that killed more than 800 people across the world in 2003. It belongs to a family of viruses that most often cause the common cold. SARS emerged in China.

As per the clinical analysis undertaken by the British and Saudi researchers, the MERS virus bears similarities to SARS virus, but there also exists important differences between the two.

As per the data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) the MERS coronavirus that emerged in 2012 has killed 45 deaths across the world. WHO confirmed the data based on the reports of 90 laboratories. It also issued a travel guide for the pilgrims going on Haj in Saudi Arabia stating that the health risk caused by the virus was relatively low.

The identified symptoms of MERS include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath and muscle pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting.

The cases of MERS have been identified in the Middle East - with patients in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Few cases related to it were also seen in France, Italy, Germany, Tunisia and the United Kingdom.

Oprah Winfrey was named the most powerful celebrity on 26 June 2013 by Forbes, among the six women and four men who made up to the top 10.

Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce 
and Madonna. 59 Years old Oprah Winfrey is said to have made 77 million earnings between June 2012 and June 2013. She was also credited for her prominence on TV, on social media and in the press. 

It is important here to note that Oprah Winfrey has topped the list on four previous occasions, and she is one of three celebrities who featured on the prestigious list every year since its inception in 1999, along with radio DJ Howard Stern and director Steven Spielberg. 

In year 2012 Jennifer Lopez, topped the list because of her public profile and earnings of 52 million dollars.

India and Hungary Signed Agreement for Gas Monitoring System

India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 on 23 June 2013 against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham with a five-run victory. After this victory, India not just maintained the top most position in ICC ODI rankings, but also widened the gap with its nearest rivals, England. 

India has the rating points of 123 now and its nearest rivals, England as well as Australia have the ranking of 113 points. South Africa, on the other hand has rating of 111.

Significant gains were made by Ravindra Jadeja and Shikhar Dhawan. It is important to note that Shikhar Dhawan was also declared as the Man of the Tournament during the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. Ravindra Jadeja climbed to his career best third ranking among all the bowlers and All-rounders category. 

R.Ashwin is placed at ninth position among the bowlers. Among the batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan jumped 21 positions and reached 29th position with his performance in Champions trophy. Shikhar Dhawan was also given the Golden Bat trophy for scoring maximum number of runs in the tournament. 

Protean Skipper AB Devilliers is at the top most position of batsmen, followed by Hashim Amla. At the third position is India’s Virat Kohli.

39th G8 Summit held at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland

Thirty ninth G8 Summit was held at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland from 17 May - 18 June 2013. The two day summit was presided over by the David Cameron, the Prime Minister of United Kingdom. 

The two day summit was attended by the leaders from G8 Nations namely Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the USA and UK. Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, and Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council also were a part of the meet. 

The Lough Erne Declaration from the G8 Summit 2013 sets out agreed principles for the future. The declaration focused on private enterprise that would drive growth, help in reduction of poverty and creation of jobs and prosperity for people around the world. It also sets out that governments have a special responsibility to make proper rules and promote good governance. In addition, fair taxes, increased transparency and open trade are vital drivers of this. The G8 leaders will make a real difference by acting on the principles in the declaration.

The UK assumed the one-year Presidency of the G8 in January 2013 and thus David Cameron, the Prime Minister of United Kingdom was the presiding leader of the 39th Summit.

Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved Mylan-Unichem Deal

The Competition Commission on 10 June 2013 has approved acquisition of a manufacturing facility of Unichem Laboratories by pharma firm Mylan Laboratories.

As per the deal Mylan will acquire the newly established manufacturing facility pharma company, Unichem located in a Special Economic Zone in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, from. It makes 'Finished Dosage Forms (FDFs).

It was after carrying out of the agreement between Mylan and Unichem on  11 March 2013, Mylan had approached CCI for its approval in April 2013.

Earlier it was observed that the planned acquisition by Mylan was with the objective to export products to be manufactured at the company facility. But, it was noted by the regulator that the deal is not going to affect any market in India as Mylan is neither acquiring any shares, voting rights or control in Unichem nor any brands or intellectual property rights from Unichem.

Mylan has 11 manufacturing facilities in India, of which 8 facilities are for manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and two are for making FDFs. Whereas Unichem have seven manufacturing facilities in India, of which 2 facilities are for manufacture of APIs and five are for FDFs which form the core of its business.

12 June 2013: World Day against Child Labour

World Day against Child Labour was celebrated on 12 June 2013. The theme this year was, No to Child Labour in Domestic Work. According to International Labour Organisation, ILO, throughout the world, there are around 215 million children who work, many of them, full-time. In fact, the ILO is marking the day by calling for action to build a worldwide movement against child labour.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates 10.5 million children around the world are working as domestic workers in hazardous, sometimes slave-like conditions. The ILO report finds 6.5 million of the 10.5 million child domestic laborers are aged between five and 14 years. More than 70 percent are girls. The United Nation’s action plan has proposed that the ILO and its member states continue to pursue the goal of effective abolition of child labour by committing themselves to eliminate all its worst forms by 2016.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

RBI hiked the Cap for Online Repatriation of Export Proceeds

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 11 June 2013 raised the limit for online repatriation of export proceeds by over three-folds to 10000 US dollars. RBI also made it mandatory to repatriate full value of exports within 12 months for units in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The decision from RBI came up with an aim of arresting the rupees slide by boosting Forex inflows. At present the rupee has touched its life time low of 58.98 against the US dollar and in last two days it has gone down by 3.5 percent against dollar. Since April 2013, it has gone down by 8 percent. 

At present, banks can offer the facility to repatriate export related remittances via online payment gateway for export of goods and services up to 3000 US dollar per transaction. In case of SEZs also earlier there existed no time limit for realization of exports. The new instructions from RBI came into force with immediate effect.
